Keto snack buyers are being urged to check their cabinets and shopping carts after Second Nature Brands pulled certain 10-ounce pouches of SECOND NATURE KETO CRUNCH SMART MIX because the package may contain undeclared cashews, pistachios and cherries. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration posted the company’s alert on May 2, one day after Second Nature Brands issued the recall, and said the mix was shipped nationwide through retail stores and online orders.

The recalled pouches carry UPC 077034013405 and a best if used by date of 2/12/2027. Only that specific package configuration is included; products with other best if used by dates are not affected. The company said no illnesses had been reported when the recall was announced, but the FDA warned that people with allergies or severe sensitivities to cashews, pistachios or cherries could face serious or life-threatening reactions if they eat the mix.

According to the FDA, the problem began when allergen-containing product was packaged in materials that did not disclose the allergens on the label. A later investigation pointed to a temporary breakdown in Second Nature Brands’ production and packaging processes. The company told consumers not to eat the affected pouches and to contact Second Nature Brands for a full refund. Matt Friedman was listed on the notice with the company’s contact number, and the FDA said it was conducting the recall with the agency’s knowledge.

For keto shoppers, the bigger lesson is that a keto label does not mean a snack is automatically safe for every diet need. Specialty mixes are often bought for convenience, but this recall shows why label checks still matter, especially for people managing tree nut allergies or other food hypersensitivities. The FDA says it enforces ingredient-labeling rules to protect consumers with food allergies, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says food allergy affects about 8% of children and nearly 11% of adults in the United States. Cherries are not one of the FDA’s major food allergens, but the agency still treats undeclared allergens as a public-health concern.

This is not the first time Second Nature Brands has faced an allergen recall. In March 2023, the company recalled 4-ounce Gluten Free Reese’s Pieces Brownie Brittle after undeclared wheat was found in the product, and the FDA said one illness had been reported in that case. Second Nature Brands, based in Madison Heights, Michigan, owns a broad snack portfolio that includes Sanders Candy, Kar’s Nuts, Sahale Snacks, Voortman Bakery, Second Nature Snacks and Brownie Brittle, which it acquired in December 2022.
