Alivion’s Nutrion is trying to turn a familiar keto clue, breath acetone, into a pocket readout for fat burning. ETH Zurich said the smartphone-operated device can detect the metabolic marker in breath almost as accurately as a mass spectrometer, and that laypeople can use it to see when the body starts burning fat during dieting or exercise.

That pitch lands directly in the gap many keto dieters know well. Keto breath is caused by acetone, one of the ketones produced when the body shifts toward fat oxidation, but smelling it is not the same as measuring it. A 2002 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that breath acetone is as good a predictor of ketosis as urinary acetoacetate, and noted that it can be measured noninvasively and frequently.

The research trail behind the device goes back years. ETH Zurich had already publicized a similar breath-fat-burn sensor concept in October 2017. A 2018 Sensors review described breath ketone sensors as a noninvasive way to guide ketogenic diet monitoring, and a 2021 prospective controlled study in the Turkish Journal of Neurology examined breath acetone measurement on a ketogenic diet. More recently, a 2023 Royal Society of Chemistry article reported a handheld device that tracked breath acetone during a ketogenic diet in five volunteers.

Alivion describes Nutrion as its first commercial device focused on breath acetone as a marker for fat metabolism. That makes it more than a novelty for the keto crowd, especially for beginners trying to tell whether they are in ketosis and for more experienced users who want a quicker check than finger pricks or lab visits. The key question is whether the reading changes real-world decisions, such as carb cuts, fasting windows, or workout timing, better than the cheaper tools already in circulation.

For now, the device sits at the intersection of lifestyle tracking and laboratory science. It promises a faster, noninvasive answer to a question that has long forced keto users to rely on urine strips, blood testing, or guesswork, and it does so with a sensor lineage that has been building since at least 2017.
